Energy Audits

 What is Energy Audit?

Reduce demand before considering supply side measures

Energy audit is just like financial audit. It helps us to understand -

·      Pattern of energy consumption.

·      Mode of energy consumption.

·      Extent of energy consumption so that we can identify the possible areas of conservation.

The main stages of energy audit are -

·      Analysis, which starts from recognition of problem.

·      Action, i.e., apply the available solution.

·      Monitoring, i.e. monitor the effect of action; compare the actual data with planned data.

 Do you know

·       Energy Audits can identify and save up to 15% to 30 % on your energy bill.

·      Recovery of waste heat in furnaces can result in up to 20% in oil savings.

·      20-25% energy savings are realized by resizing and modification of pumps and blowers.

·      An un insulated steam pipe of 150 mm diameter and 100 meter in length, carrying steam at 8 Kg/ Sq. cm. pressure, results in wastage of over 25 Kls of furnace oil per annum.

 ·      An air leakage from 1/2 inch diameter hole in a compressed air line working at a pressure of 7Kg/Sq. cm, drains almost Rs. 2500 per day

·      A 5 degree C in evaporator temperature in an air conditioning unit increases the specific power consumption by 15%.

·      Steel fans FRP fans with aerofoil design; savings is 15-40% .

Energy saving tips for industrial consumers

·      Lubricate motors and motor drives regularly to reduce losses.

·      Motor should be kept clean for proper cooling.

·      Motor should be as close to the load as possible.

·      Use high efficiency motors.

·      To reduce loss due to `slip' tighten belt and pulley.

·      Avoid use of over - sized motors.

·      Replace worn-out bearing immediately and ensure timely repair.

·      Make greater use of day light.

 ·      Use shunt capacitors across motor terminals to reduce KVA charges and also to avoid damage to the motors.

 ·      Adopt energy conservation as a culture.
